On August 17th, respected Tamil journalist and human rights defender Kanapathipillai Kumanan has been summoned for an "inquiry" by the Counter Terrorism & Investigation Division (CTID) in Alampil, Mullaitivu. The reason? Allegations that he is “supporting the LTTE” — simply for sharing photographs.
Kumanan is widely recognized as one of the most trusted journalists reporting from Sri Lanka’s North-East. His photo documentation is of exceptionally high quality, and his commitment to truth-telling, even under constant pressure, is unwavering.
The current government claims to mark a break from the racist policies of the past. Yet Tamil journalists continue to face harassment, surveillance, and intimidation — and this latest incident proves that repression is far from over.
Kumanan and his team continue their important work under extremely difficult conditions. In moments like these, it is our collective duty to stand for their safety and uphold press freedom.
