Captain Miller

Captain Miller, born Vallipuram Vasanthan on January 1, 1966, was an Eelam Tamil from Yalpanam, Tamileelam. Educated at Hartley College, he grew up during a period of intense ethnic tensions and repression of the aspirations of the Eelam Tamil population by the genocidal Sri Lankan state, marked by deadly anti-Tamil pogroms.

In 1984, a year after the Black July massacres, he joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) and took on the nom de guerre Miller. On July 5, 1987, Captain Miller carried out the first-ever Black Tiger mission by driving a truck loaded with explosives into a Sri Lankan Army garrison in Nelliyadi, Yalpanam district, fulfilling his mission by taking the lives of enemy forces.

Since then, Black Tiger Day (Karumpuli Naal) is observed on July 5 in Tamileelam and around the world to honor the sacrifices of Captain Miller and the elite unit’s members. By 2008, the LTTE reported that 356 Black Tigers had sacrificed their lives, 254 of them in sea operations.

Captain Miller’s dedication and sacrifice symbolized the struggle for Tamileelam. Remembering his courage reminds us of the ongoing fight for justice and the hope for a future where the aspirations of the Eelam Tamil people are realized. His legacy encourages us to continue striving for a peaceful and equitable Tamileelam.
